Visigoths Repelled, Gig on Feb 20

Per our last best information, the Dentones will perform at the Carousel Lounge on Feb 20, 2009 in the 9:00pm slot after the Love Vandals who play at 7:00pm. Hope to see you there. We're thinking post-Valentine's Day thematic frivolity may be in the air. We may even put some of it there outselves. Thank you for your patience while with the hacking incident last week.

Dentones Update

The Dentones lately have been busy with a) being sick, b) having lives or pretending to, and c) (most importantly) recording a select set of tracks for purposes not completely understood but which may include the antagonism or delectation of the ear, depending on what makes you happy.

Since we don't have any of that stuff completed yet, please enjoy two blasts from the past: Some tracks recorded by bands we came out of between 1985 and 1991.

When Clowns Go Bad - Ultra Rare Studio Recording - 1985

California Sun - Go On - Gotta - My Face Is On Lunch Box - Pull Me Out - She - Sounds of Sherry - Substitute

Dagwood's Blaufisch - Present Recordings - 1991

Wannabe - My Bitchin - Time and Dreams - She'll Get By - Lemonade - Backbreaker - There Will Fall Soft Rain

(Post-) Valentine's Day Gig

Proto-Dentone emeritus Mad Doctor Mark would like to announce that the Dentones will play at the Carousel Lounge on Friday, February 15, currently scheduled for the 7:00pm-9:00pm slot, followed by the Love Vandals. Wear pink and red and hearts if you have them. Nothing goes better with guitars and beer than pink and hearts.

June Tunes

Speaking for the Dentones I'd like to thank all the folks who came out to see us in spite of the scheduling problems (the delay and the condensed show). Po said perhaps squinching all things up together that way, without the self-indulgent stalling in between, might be something to aspire to rather than something to allow circumstances to impose upon us. And note that the image, above, reveals the Secret Shame of Zo - he does, indeed, stand a foot taller than any other Dentone, and has been spending many of their earlier gigs attempting to deceive the camera via false perspective into presenting himself as a being of ordinary human proportions.

Anyway, presumptuously speaking for all of us Zo wishes to present all Dentones fans in attendance with the Evil Spiked Cowbell Award for persistence above and beyond the call of duty. See the joy in those eyes? If you squint, and look past the rosacea and visible pain from the poor ergonomics involved with holding up his new Pearl Anarchy Cowbell to a cheesy built-in camera on his ill-used laptop, you might see that behind the serial killer expression he's all joy inside. See the spikes? Spikes mean joy. And this happy cowbell is so happy that it even has spikes on the inside. If you buy one you'll recognize the truth in these words.

We're happy - 'we' meaning the other three Dentones I speak for here - to have been able to do all of the following:

  1. Brought paraphernalia to celebrate the long, yet too-short, existence of the late Stella Boes (photographs and decorations of ourselves, our instruments, and some corner of the Carousel Lounge;
  2. Managed to squeeze in at least one new number to knock the rust off our set list;
  3. Got nearer to that mix point where the audience can hear such Dentones as they might care to hear;
  4. Managed to get off the stage in time to allow Smash Riley to play sometime near the time the original scheduling suggested;
  5. Pushed our sound slightly more Fenderward with the introduction of Zo's latest amplifier and the use of the Stellacaster; note now that all three guitar slinging monkeys now appear with Fenders or near-Fenders, and two of four amplifiers on stage originate from that esteemed manufacturer;
  6. Leaned much of our own material, sparing the gentle onlookers the learn-the-song-playing-it-in-front-of-the-audience scenario; and
  7. Managed to minimize - though not eliminate - such distress as might have resulted from the scheduling change.

Thanks to everyone for their patience hanging around longer to see us start later, especially those of you who paid the big bucks for babysitters. We'll figure out sometime if we should also thank the babysitters or have them thank us for any additional windfalls this entailed.

Dentones Sighting June 30

Come see the Dentones and the Stellacaster on June 30. As we understand it that's Saturday, June 30, at the Carousel Lounge, 7:00pm-9:00pm. And until then console yourselves for the long delay between shows by perusing this ultra rare edition of Dentones Comics.

Surviving SXSL

SXSL went better in some ways than the fabu Rae Dawn Chong birthday bash, for a variety of reasons - Todd, Alan, and I had overcome our various ailments (leaving behind only the ailments of the soul we must ever carry with us) - and scheduling and epidemiology conspired to provide us more generously with onlookers. Thanks again to Pro-Jex for allowing us to perform, and also thanks to the Love Vandals for bravely enduring our tuning and mix problems without undue stigmata of distress! This event featured the first appearance of Twaingus the Stellacaster, the guitar celebrating the lamented Stella Boes, and once RR posts his pictures on the subject we should have links soon. Also the new hosting will allow more space and bandwidth, which means more incriminating recordings from various incarnations of the bands that fractured and fused to form today's Dentones! Watch this space for more information, and note our gratitude with your indulgence while we work out funny link issues and disappearing images. Update: First fruits from RR's all-seeing eye:

Rae Dawn Chong's Birthday Bash

The Dentones have decided to dust off their guitars - after seeing the Dentones Signal shining in the sky - and play again, returning to the Carousel Lounge to play 7:00pm-9:00pm on February 28. More details as details occur.

The Rupaul Charles Comemorative Gig

Surely Peau would be pleased to know that the Nov. 17 performance, now under our belts, occurred on Rupaul's birthday. We started a bit late - we got there just as True Stories (from San Antonio and representing estilo San Antonio) were setting up and so we ran three sets back to back, generally no-frills, no drawing, no prizes, and - regretfully, perhaps, no feather boas. But in spite of the more minimal approach, we had:
  • Mme. Karla the GodWoman on sabbatical from Norway;
  • At least one Dentone so sick that prodigious amounts of generic cough medication were required to keep him vertical;
  • The successful introduction of a new item in our set drawn from the depths of the eighties and somehow pulled off in spite of inconclusive results in practices;
  • and all kinds of stuff like that there.
Thanks to everyone for coming - we'll post when we know what's next, probably sometime early in 2007.

Upcoming Nov 17 Gig?

Within the parameters of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, the Dentones still appear on the Nov 17 calendar at the Carousel Lounge, playing 9:00pm until Whenever O'Clock. Rumor has it we may have guests come all the way across the Atlantic for this one - and the very notion makes Seth of Smash Riley smile.

Rafael Rodriguez Provides Evidence

Thanks much to RR for capturing our visual essence in these galleries from the last few gigs. Makes it all much more difficult to deny, particularly the part where a few years down the road we attempt to deny the Feather Boa Incident with weak claims of That never happened and You're making it up and Stop lyin'. For posterity, a permanent link will point to Rafael's Photos for easy delivery of the evidence against us. Makes me wonder, though...how is it possible to look so solemn clad in a resplendant feather boa? Leave this to the philosophers to understand.

Gig Summary

Since everyone is dying to know how the first-ever-Dentones-opening-for-Smash-Riley-gig went, the following summary should cover the important points of October 7 at the Carousel Lounge:
  • In the Dentones' second set, Stacy wore, alternately and in combination, the Champagne White Filament Boa (coiled), the John B. Denton Song Stovepipe Hat, and the Gold Lame Elvis Jacket.
  • Todd wore the Calico Boa (long).
  • Clark Polan wore the Tuxedo Black Boa (semi-coiled, semi-long).
  • Alan pounded the skins in the Elegant Violet Boa (semi-coiled, semi-long).
  • At various points, Julio of Smash Riley wore Jennifer's Criminal Minimal Black Boa (coiled).
  • Nathan exuded a dignified vibe in the Champagne White Filament Boa, worn long.
  • Jennifer alternately modeled the Tuxedo Black Boa and her own Criminal Minimal Black Boa (worn long).
  • Seth thrilled all onlookers by combining the John B. Denton Song Stovepipe Hat (worn low) and the Effulgent Rhinestone Denim Half-Jacket (sparkly yet casual).
Oh, and somewhere in there we played a bunch of songs. Thanks to everyone for coming out and witnessing the slow-motion fashion train wreck even as it made history!

Son of Upcoming Gigs

Per the last, best information, we play the Carousel Lounge, Saturday October 7, 7:30pm-9:30pm, to be followed by Smash Riley. For directions, click here. Also in the works is a Nov. 17 gig, details to be clarified. Yell until you see feathers!

Another Gig Survived

Audience reaction was pretty favorable to our Sep 15 performance at the Carousel Lounge, although perhaps ambition left us with a bit of what we reached for out of our grasp. Some highlights include:
  • The shortest abortive debut of a song ever.
  • Peau wore the tattoo sleeves.
  • The audience demanded the return of the hat.
  • In a shock surprise turn of events no one ever would have predicted, we fought with the mix.
  • In another shock surprise turn of events on one ever would have expected, we spent an hour arguing relationship with the PA.
  • The horrible mustard yellow parachute pants with the superfluous velcro fasteners and completely unnecessary zippers
  • The stage debut of the cheesy 15 watt Blues Junior.
We didn't quite get around to doing anything like the promised raffled-off song (maybe sometime later, to paraphrase John Lydon) or an attempt at Guitar Pose Poker, but perhaps the future will allow one or more of these to happen. Thanx much to all who came out to see us!

8.29.2006

September 15

We play the Carousel Lounge again September 15 - probably 7:00pm - 9:00pm once again. Come see us there! We'll be throwing out new material like loaves and fishes.

Thanks RR.

I forgot to post any of the pictures from June 30. I lost the link to the Rodriguez CAD Services page gallery - sorry about that - but I did manage to find a local copy of this one:

Upcoming Gigs?

Watch this space - tentatively we're scheduled for the 7:00-9:00pm slot at the Carousel Lounge on August 5 and September 15, but on short notice this might change. Until then, here's some audio of the June 26 gig to hold you over:

June 30 Mission Complete

June 30 is a done deal, with the Dentones achieving new levels of controlled garhound-like imprecision and interesting innovations in mix and tuning, and to this we can add the following milestones:
  1. Three Dentones presented new songs to inflict upon an unsuspecting public
  2. Po presented new equipment (speakers and EQ stomp box thingus)
  3. Ouzo Man presented new equipment (newer, less powerful, all-tube amplifier)
  4. Alain leBeau experimented again with his digital recording thingus, meaning we may have one or more usable tracks to present as MP3s on this web page
  5. Snuff graced us again with his Charles Nelson Reilly shirt
  6. No one died of heat prostration and
  7. Stella shook it
Pictures and audio will appear here as they become available to me.

June 30 Gig

Since somebody can't get enough of us, we're playing again! Friday 30 June 2006, 7:00pm-9:00pm (or until Ejection Girl physically forces us off the stage) Carousel Lounge 1110 E 52nd St Austin, TX 78723 (512) 452-6790

A Blast from The Past (1991)

May 12 Gig

(Updated!) We have received confirmation that we'll appear again at the Carousel Lounge on Friday May 12. I assume our normal 7:00pm-9:00pm slot. Po has heard back.

3.25.2006

Looks like a success

I have no pictures to provide for the 3/24/2006 gig yet, but can tentatively report the following: Howell the Guitar seems to have established his credentials and made me a better person; Todd appeared with a cool hand-tooled Charles Nelson Reilly shirt; Po got poked in the side ane earlobes a few times by someone; I couldn't hear myself and screwed up "Stuck to the Side" by playing half a step off; I couldn't remember or did't care about the structure of "Pirate Love;" we heard a rumor that one time our audience ran the Carousel Lounge completely out of beer; I gave away two out of the last three Conspiracy Shirts (to Stacia and to Jennifer E. C.); and probably a bunch of other stuff happened. We were doing not too badly but then the next act came up with some adonis in a sweater. He was too handsome, and this annoys me. Maybe a bunch of other stuff happened.

3.24.2006

Wish Us Luck

Or even better, be there.

3.20.2006

Don't forget now

Friday 24 March 2006 at the Carousel Lounge, 7:00pm-9:00pm (time may be subject to tweaking). Wear Conspiracy shirts if you have them!

3.18.2006

No-Go on the 18th

Looks like the weather - like any act of God - was a bit more than the Dentones credential could cause Powers That Be to waive. But as a consolation prize, here's a picture of me - the Founding Father of the Great Tee Shirt Conspiracy - in all my sweaty glory from the January 24 gig, shortly before the loss of electolytes almost rendered me horizontal. (Ringo Starr once said "I think I'm going to fall over," and, to the surprise of all onlookers, actually did. Perhaps I found myself imperfectly channeling that sixties mojo).

Note the ridiculously self-important look on my face, this coming from a guy who has performed songs about his man parts in public before. Perhaps that's just the Denton dignitas trying to assert itself.
